Cannabis Civics at Black Cannabis Week
Black Cannabis Week in Philadelphia is just around the corner, and this year, Black Dragon Breakfast Club is activating Black voices like never before. But what exactly is cannabis civics, and why should you care?
Let's dive into the details and find answers to some crucial questions.
What is Cannabis Civics, and Why Should You Care?
Cannabis civics is all about engaging with the legislative process and ensuring that your voice is heard when it comes to the laws and regulations surrounding cannabis. It's about actively participating in shaping the future of cannabis policies, especially in Pennsylvania.
Pennsylvania’s republican introduced Adult Use bill would allow for the recreational use of cannabis (without a license) to people ages 21+ and over. Possession of up to 30 grams. THC levels limited to 15% flower and 40% concentrates. Current “operators” would be fast- tracked for recreational licenses. Homegrow would be permitted for medical users only. Expungements occur but would not include “immediate releases”. Law enforcement would have the ability to decide if you are driving under the influence and the authority to eliminate the legacy market. Here’s why you should care:
Senate Bill 846 (SB-846)
Dragons for Adults: If this bill passes, adults aged 21 and over can have a blast with recreational cannabis without needing a special license.
Stay Chill with 30 Grams: You can possess up to 30 grams of cannabis, which ok depending on your needs.
Mind Your THC Levels: Dosing police alert. The bill limits THC levels to 15% in flower form and 40% in concentrates.
Fast-Track for the Pros: Existing cannabis operators get a speed pass to snag recreational licenses, but new applicants will have to wait in line.
Green Thumbs for Patients: Homegrown cannabis is a perk, but it's only for folks with medical needs.
Expungements Are In, But...: Some past cannabis-related records will be wiped clean, but don't expect immediate jailbreaks.
Drive Sober, Stay Legal: Law enforcement can decide if you're too high to drive, and they have the power to put the underground market out of business.

How Does a Bill Become a Law?
Understanding the legislative process is crucial in making a difference. In simple terms, a bill becomes a law through a series of steps, including introduction, committee review, debate, voting in both chambers (House and Senate), and finally, the governor's signature. It's essential to engage in each of these stages to influence the outcome.
The Significance of 2024
You might be wondering why 2024 is important in this context. The significance lies in the opportunity to shape the future of adult-use cannabis in Pennsylvania. It's a pivotal moment where your voice can contribute to the decision-making process and potentially lead to the legalization of adult-use cannabis.
